The pros for the development of technology with respect to science, are that with new technology we can do new experiments that often were not possible before. Supercomputers for example mean we can generate and analyse massive amounts of data that we were simply not able to do 30 years ago. Being able to get all this new data drives discovery meaning we learn lots of new things quite quickly that will ultimate help society!
One of the main cons, in my opinion, is there is so much new technology that is being invented and designed, is that we don’t often know how to apply it in the best way to make full use of it. Take graphene as an example. After it’s discovery about a decade ago, there was an explosion in the amount of research done into it, and also the amount of money poured into it. However now there is a bit of a downwards trajectory as people don’t fully understand how to use it or how to apply all the things that were discovered with it! This leads to the main problem which is a series of unproductive investments, and ultimately wasting money and time.

Development of technology can make a chemist’s life a lot easier! I have robots that run purification procedures for me; an electronic lab book that keeps my research all neat and organised and a microwave with a robotic arm that runs reactions a lot faster than usual. It gives me more time to put on other reactions and analyse data.

We also use computational chemistry to predict how certain reactions will work which can save us time in the lab if the computer model is right!

The downside is that people think this may lead to companies needing fewer chemists to get things done because we’re becoming more efficient but I personally think it means they expect more from us in terms of how much work we do!

Until the chemputer is rolled out worldwide (see this video), I don’t need to worry to much about my job! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvEkm7ZBKSc
