The most difficult part perhaps is dealing with things not working (which seems to be all the time!). Research is something that nobody has ever done before, so from the outset you don’t actually know if the experiments you are planning are going to actually work, or even give you the results you would expect! But this can be turned on it’s head, as when things do work it is a great feeling!

The most difficult part of my job is motivating myself to do work when things aren’t going well. A PhD is somewhere between being a student and an employee. You’re largely left to your own devices to work on a project and my boss isn’t around very much to bounce ideas off.

During weeks when my chemistry hasn’t been working it is hard to keep going but when I catch myself being negative I remind myself of all I have achieved in the last couple of years and how lucky I am to be doing the research I’m doing and that usually keeps me going.

Most difficult part of my job is when Government make decisions that would be harmful to research and healthcare in the UK.
