I struggled with learning to work by myself, as one of my teachers was big on self-taught study. My main problem was finding the right way to motivate myself to work independently, and not in a group like when I was in class. Despite this, it was good that she did make this happen as by the time I reached University I was more used to independent work. This is the main way you will have to work if you go to University, or further study as you will be in large classes most of the time.

I studied lots of different kinds of chemistry during my first degree. It gets harder to work on types of chemistry you know you don’t want to specialise in once you figure out the kind of stuff you’re really interested in.

I really enjoyed modules that talked about drug discovery, chemical biology etc. so I found modules about random radioactive metals, physical chemistry (a lot of physics and Greek symbols) etc. hard.

While my specialism is in organic chemistry – all about the chemistry involving carbon and life – I found learning lots and lots of different reactions difficult. The best lecturers were the ones who broke it down and made sure you grasped the general idea of how a reaction worked, rather than just giving you loads of recipes to learn.
