By “good” job – what do you mean? Financial stability? Enjoyable to do?

I think you can do a lot of different jobs with scientific training, whether that’s through apprenticeships or university.

Across the different jobs I have done, so in the laboratory, in Government and now in Pharmaceutical Policy, people gave me their opinions on whether I was making the right decision.

Only you can assess whether a job is good for you or not. If you love what you do and you are as well off as you need to be or would like to be then that’s great!

Absolutely! Not only is your job completely different to most other peoples, there is usually so much variety from day to day that you never know what you might be doing! Not only this, there are so many opportunities for scientists, especially young scientists in the UK. During my PhD and postdoctoral research I have travelled to India, China and America with work – most of these would not have arisen without my work in science!
You also have a challenge in your day to day job. As research is usually something that has never been done before, you have to really think about what has happened when you do an experiment. I don’t think many other jobs challenge you in such a positive way!

I think it is ultimately a good job because you’re helping to solve the world’s problems. It depends on what you mean by a good job as being a scientist certainly isn’t easy. It doesn’t always pay well, the hours certainly aren’t great because you can end up in the lab at all sorts of weird times to get stuff done, and when things don’t work it can affect your mental health but every job has its advantages and disadvantages.
