Yes – I worked on mice during my masters and PhD to learn how their immune systems worked during skin cancer. Animals are essential to drug discovery and development at the moment as they are needed to test if something is safe. We use animals to make sure that when we give a new drug to a human that they don’t have significant side affects or die.

I don’t personally as a chemist. My drugs are in too early a stage to test them in animals. At the moment they are tested in individual cells in a lab.

I don’t, but my once my work is done and it is taken forward then it is highly likely someone will since it’s an animal vaccine.

Like Fiona and Eleanor, I haven’t had to do any work with animals as I am at such an early stage of the drug discovery process. But things that I have worked on have gone on to be tested on some animals when I worked in industry. This is unfortunately an important part of the process to ensure what we make is safe to humans and the environment.

I am actually hoping to go into a career focusing on ways to safely test drugs and chemicals without the use of animals in the future!

That is really good to hear. Hopefully in the future computer modelling will become so accurate that we will never need to test on any animals! Good luck!
