As a PhD student I am the project manager of my own project. It is just me working on it but I get to ask other people to help take part in it and I ask them to do things for me e.g. I ask a biologist to test my drug compounds, so I guess I can say I am the leader of the team working on my project.
I am not a team leader as of now but work on my own projects in addition to helping others with their projects. But if the future, I can imagine that role.
I have to be in my job in some respects, as I am now one of the more senior members of my group people seem to think I know what I am talking about sometimes! This means talking people through problems they might have and trying to help them come up with solutions. Providing advice, no matter what level you are at, or seniority you may have, is a skill of a team leader, and I am sure everybody shows skills such as that in their day to day lives!
