Apprenticeships are really important for technical jobs such as e.g. lab technicians. If you prefer that type of work or you’re unsure whether you’re ready to go to University then it’s a great way of experiencing what working full-time feels like and what an area of work is like.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative to pursuing a research project. I chose to stay at school until I was 18, go to uni for 5 years, then start my PhD in chemistry but my colleague Ryan left school at 16, became an apprentice chemistry technician at a pharmaceutical company. After that training they offered him the chance to go to uni part time, and then when he sadly lost his job – not his fault, the company closed down – he decided to do a PhD and knew far more than the rest of us.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative to higher education in my opinion. They can give real-life and relevant experience in a job that you want to do from the word go, and many of these companies will also pay for a higher education degree as well like Fiona said. AstraZeneca for example are one such company who offer that.
