The type of PhD I did asked questions which required a lot of “system biology” thinking. So this means that instead of looking at one protein, I looked at how multiple cells interacted and multiple processes in a number of areas around the body.

I liked the variety of that as I was able to review a whole process rather than just a single protein.

What I like about my current research is it’s new. No one (from what I’ve read) has tried to specifically make drugs for my particular enzyme but I know there are several research groups around the world in need of drugs for my enzyme now to help their research.

My current project is one of the most applied ones I have ever worked on – by this I mean that I can see some real world applications directly from it, which is unusual for a lot of researchers because we do fundamental research that contributes to basic science. Being able to do actually work on something that you can see can make a difference in the world is quite a buzz!
