Coding is my entire job! I write programs to help understand chemical problems. Most of my work is done using Python. What coding do you do?

Hi Carina, that’s great you love coding. It’s a really important skill to have that will help you get lots of different kinds of jobs in the future. I do a little bit of coding when carrying out computational chemistry experiments. It can save me time from using the software’s graphical interface where you click on lots of things to do particular jobs. Telling the computer to pick a particular atom is much easier by code. I use Python. I also use it when using another programme called Knime which allows me to process huge quantities of data.

It isn’t part of my job, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it is important! I think it should be an essential part of most peoples education in schools or University as that skill is going to be very important in the future!

I do quite a bit of bioinformatics (using computers too solve biology problems) as well as lab work so I can code in Python and I can use R.
